No. 16 Dons Advance with 51-48 Win Over No. 17 San Diego Mesa
No. 16 Santa Ana will travel to play No. 1 Mt. SAC on Saturday night.
SANTA ANA, Calif - No. 16 seeded Santa Ana College women's basketball fought off the No. 17 San Diego Mesa Olympians (15-14, 7-5) to earn a 51-48 win in round one of the 3C2A Southern California Regionals on Wednesday night.
With 5:30 left in the fourth quarter, Anaya Beard stepped up for the Dons (16-13, 3-9) as she broke the 45-45 tie with back-to-back buckets to give SAC a four point lead.
The Olympians hit one more shot and a free throw in the last three minutes of the game but a layup from Vicki Om and two consecutive stops, including a block on a break away layup by Mia Rivera, sealed it for SAC.
Neither team shot the ball particularly well but the Dons were able to use their pressure defense to force more turnovers (22 TO), scoring 16 off of them while getting 10 more shots.
Beard led the way with 14 points and 13 rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. Kiki Graham filled the stat sheet with 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists while holding SDMC's All-State guard Stevie Lundquist to just 13 points (5-19).
Point guards Rivera and Om combined for 17 points, 11 boards, nine assists and six steals in the win.
Santa Ana is set to go on the road for round two of regionals where they will face No. 1 seeded Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
