No. 25 SAC Women’s Basketball Knocks Off No. 8 OCC to Start Second Round of OEC Play
No. 25 SAC held off No. 8 Orange Coast in a critical OEC matchup.
SANTA ANA, Calif - Mia Rivera led the No. 25 SAC Women's Basketball team to an upset win over No. 8 Orange Coast (17-7, 5-3) in a critical Orange Empire Conference (OEC) matchup.
The Dons (14-9, 2-5) had just one win in the first round of OEC play but their big performance against the Pirates could get them going in the right direction to finish the regular season.
Rivera, a sophomore out of Cerritos High, carried SAC with 19 points, seven assists and six boards. The point guard had struggled shooting the ball in conference play to this point but came up big when her team needed her in this one.
Santa Ana went up by 22 with 7:54 remaining in the fourth quarter but saw their lead dwindle after OCC began to press fullcourt, forcing turnovers and capitalizing in transition. The Pirates cut the lead to just eight (52-44) at the 4:51 mark.
But the Dons responded soon after as Kiki Graham got a layup to go and Faith Ledesma nailed a three to close the door on the comeback.
Despite being in foul trouble for most of the night, Anaya Beard posted 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks for another productive night while Vicki Om got the Dons early, all 11 of her points coming in the first half.
Santa Ana will try to make a run in a very competitive OEC race. They'll host the Fullerton Hornets on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
