SANTA ANA, Calif - No. 2 ranked Santa Ana College baseball opened Orange Empire Conference play with a 2-1 series win against the No. 28 ranked Saddleback Bobcats (11-8, 1-2).
The Dons (16-2-1, 2-1) got hot early with 10 runs in the first three innings of game one. Barrett Ronson, Nikko Paoletto and Treson Arita led the way with multi-hit days to help SAC secure a 15-5 win.
But in game two, the Bobcats flipped the script as they jumped out to an 11-1 lead with a nine run third inning. Santa Ana managed to add a few more runs but ultimately fell by a score of 13-5.
In the rubber match, Zach Ireland was the difference maker for the Dons as the freshman right hander struck out six batters while giving up just 3 runs (2 earned) in six innings of work.
Offensively, Jack Mueller carried the load with a hit and three runs batted in while Ken Tomitaka added a pair of hits with an RBI to push SAC to a 6-3 lead.
Santa Ana was able to hold on as Adrian Villegas and Colin Galvin combined for five strikeouts in three innings, with Galvin getting the save.
The Dons will face Orange Coast in week two of OEC play starting on Tuesday, March 10th. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. at OCC.
