LEMOORE, Calif. - The Santa Ana College Wrestling team competed at the 3C2A Southern Regional championships, placing three wrestlers in the top 8 to qualify for the 3C2A State Championships tournament. Andre Garcia and Dylan both placed third place at 133 and 285 pounds, with Christian Godinez placing 8th to round out the team that will represent at State.
Andre Garcia started his day with a win by fall in the quarter-finals round, with a loss in the semi-finals sending him to the consolation semi-finals. He was able to score his second fall of the day to advance the consolation finals match. He was then able to secure a 6-0 win over #4 ranked Rylan Madrid of Mt San Antonio for the 3rd place medal.
Dylan Avila won his first match in the quarter-finals by an overtime win of 2-1, but in the semi-finals was taken down his back for near fall points. With time expiring, he would likewise be sent to the consolation semi-finals match. He was able to advance to the 3rd place match due to his opponent defaulting the match due to injury. He would avenge a loss earlier in the season by defeating Seth Seibert of Bakersfield 2-1 to earn 3rd place.
Christian Godinez returned from an injury to compete in his second tournament of the season. He lost a close match in the round of 16 after being scored on for a takedown in the closing seconds of regulation. He would recover in the consolation second round to outscore his opponent 1-0 to qualify for the state tournament, ultimately taking 8th place.
Three other Dons wrestlers were able to finish in 9th place to be selected as alternates for the state tournament. Tadeo Aragon (133), Aaron Lopez (141), and Alexander Pichette (174) were able to win the 9th place brackets after dropping out of the main tournament. They will have a chance to wrestle in the event that they are selected.
