Dons Defeat Cypress 3-2, Lose to Coast 4-1 on the Beach
With the split on the sand, the Dons are now 3-1 heading into their match at Fullerton College.
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA - The Dons defeated Cypress College 3-2 for the second time this season after falling to Orange Coast College 4-1 on the sand volleyball courts in Huntington Beach. The split moves the Dons to 3-1 on the season, while the loss to Orange Coast makes the Dons 0-1 in Orange Empire Conference competition.
Dons vs. Orange Coast, OCC wins 4-1
The day opened with the Dons taking on host Orange Coast College. Of the five pairings, the Dons got a win from their #5 team of Madison Logan and Hailey Johnson as the pair defeated Megan Rawlings and Christine Bowman in three sets. Logan and Johnson overcame an opening set loss to win the final two sets 21-18 and 15-10.
The Dons #2 pairing of Myriah Kunipo-Aguirre and Michelle Nguyen played two close sets as they pushed Shayna Johnson and Alexa Herrera to extra points in the first set (24-22) before falling by a score of 21-15 in the second set. Esther Arroyo and Megan Leigh Moskito, the Dons #4 pairing, also played a pair of close sets as they narrowly lost to Kasse Kiriu-Dela Cruz and Alyssa Assayag by scores of 21-17 and 21-19.
Jenny Lopez and Bobby Woodcock fell to Danielle Boyette and Sierra Brown 21-2 and 21-8 in the #1 pairing matchup while Nina Alejandro and Iliana Mendoza lost to Lehua Alama-Jordan and Danyelle Brown 21-12 and 21-14 in the #3 pairings.
Dons vs. Cypress, SAC wins 3-2
The Dons match against Cypress College came down to the wire with the outcome falling on the #2 pairing. With the teams tied 2-2, Kunipo-Aguirre and Nguyen went into a third, winner-takes-all, set against Ivana Escobar and Nae Bender.
Bender and Escobar won the first set 21-16 before Kunipo-Aguirre and Nguyen forced the third set with a 21-18 win in the second set. The match continued to be close all the way to the end with Kunipo-Aguirre and Nguyen pulling off the win in extra points with a score of 16-14.
Alejandro and Mendoza picked up a straight-set win over Susan Suski and Ave Mikaele in the #4 pairing, 22-20 and 21-16, while Cypress was forced to forfeit the #5 pairing. The #1 and #4 pairings went to Cypress with Charity Dennis and Malayla Taylor defeating Shaila Aceves and Woodcock 21-14 and 21-17, while Cassidy Johnson and Jasmine Covington defeated Arroyo and Moskito 21-17 and 21-16.
